A Great Starting Point....

How much should I eat is one of the most common questions I get as a certified nutrition coach.

This question is far more complicated than the person asking the question wishes. As a coach providing personalized feedback for each individual client, how much someone should eat is based on:

  • Their personal goals (gain weight, lose weight, maintain weight)
  • Their activity levels (Gym Rat, Yogi, Body Builder, avid walker or none)
  • Their non-exercise activity (are you working behind a computer screen all day?)
  • Their access to (or desire to invest in) supplements

And of course...

WHAT you eat is just as important (and arguably more important) than HOW MUCH you eat is!

ALL THAT BEING SAID

All that being said...there are a number of "formulas" out there that provide a great starting point for us to consider when trying to create or design the sustainable (and enjoyable) nutrition plan that GETS YOU RESULTS!

Typically, they first calculate your Resting Metabolic Rate (the energy required to keep your body functioning at rest), the thermic effect of food (the energy cost of chewing, swallowing, digesting, absorbing and storing food) and the thermic effect of physical activity (both exercise and non-exercise).

Given all of these factors, based on a few input factors like height, weight and sex, these formulas spit out a number of calories recommended to maintain your current weight.

WHAT NEXT

What happens next is based on your experience level, your goals and the amount of data we coaches already have access to.

Essentially, we want to slowly (sustainably) build a nutrition plan with foods you enjoy, that gets you the results you are after, based on the calories your body PROBABLY needs to get those results, all while monitoring and making minor adjustments along the way.

SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE

It is not terribly difficult to drop a substantial amount of weight quickly. People do this ALL the time by cutting calories, being miserable, feeling like they are starving ALL the time, and working out like a madman or woman. The problem is that none of this behavior is sustainable and leads to weight gain (Yo-Yo much!?!?) and a generally poor attitude towards fitness and nutrition.

Instead, we aim to slowly and steadily alter body composition (toning, shaping, gaining or losing weight) while TEACHING and EDUCATING our clients about the nutrition and activity required to get results, keep results and enjoy the process along the way!
