Listen to your body whisper before it has to SCREAM!

October 05, 2022β€’2 min read

β€œI laughed more in the hospital than I ever have in my life, making fun of all the weird things that were happening to me.”

- Christina Applegate on how humor helped her battle breast cancer

October

Breast cancer is by far the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Read that again- most commonly DIAGNOSED. Is this good news or bad?⁉️ πŸ€”

About 250,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, which is 250,000 too many... but maybe it's because we ladies are actually getting our mammograms and finding it? We're treating, and often beating breast cancer these days, which is certainly a win vs. 100 years ago. πŸŽ‰

8 Reasons

My 6th Mammogram πŸŽ—οΈ

Last week, I had a breast lift with many necessary pre-op appointments. One of which was a mammogram- my 6th one to date. Was I less scared this time for that call from the nurse with my results because it was a preemptive screening prior to cosmetic surgery? NOPE. Am I ok? Thank goodness, yes. Until next time, boob smasher! πŸ‘‹

Boo Bees

All went well in the operating room, but two days later my left breast felt warm, swollen and was visibly bigger than my right. I'd developed a hematoma that required emergency evacuation- aka another surgery. 😨

Luckily, we caught it early, and treated it immediately. It’s over now, and I'm again on the road to recovery. Point being, listen to your body whisper before it has to scream! 😱

If there is ANYTHING that doesn’t feel right, insurance companies will normally cover mammograms starting at age 39, and sometimes even twice per year. If you’re told you have dense breast tissue, be sure to get an ultrasound, as well. Insurance should cover that, too. πŸ‘

No insurance? Check out freemammograms.org for a low cost or free screening near you. Still not sure where to start, just reach out and I’ll gladly help you. πŸ€—

Early Detection

In the meantime, I’ll be preparing my pink wig and witch hat so I can take part in my local breast cancer awareness event, Pink Witches Night Out. I recommend finding something similar near you that’s good for your soul. Perhaps a 5k or silent auction to raise funds for a breast cancer charity that matters to you. πŸŽ—οΈ

Support those that are fighting breast cancer, honor those lost to it, and celebrate the brave women (and some men!) that conquered it. πŸ’ͺ
